The Longfellow Community of Minneapolis is situated between Hiawatha Avenue and the Mississippi River, and within the community there are five separate neighborhoods. This progressive community received it's name from the Longfellow Neighborhood which took it's name from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the famous poet that wrote the popular poem, The Song of Hiawatha. The Twin Cities light rail system runs the entire west border of this community, which allows easy access to Downtown Minneapolis, and the surrounding areas. This area of Minneapolis had significant residential development that occurred in the 1920's with many of the homes purchased as house kits from Sears Catalogs.
The Cooper Neighborhood was named after James Fenimore Cooper, a 19th century author who wrote many novels including the legendary book, The Last of the Mohicans.
The Hiawatha Neighborhood is named after it's elementary school, which was inspired from the famous poem, The Song of Hiawatha. This area of Minneapolis has many parks including the Mississippi River's lock and dam, and Minnehaha Park, which is were Minnehaha Falls plummets more than 50 feet on it's way to the Mississippi River.
The Howe Neighborhood like it's elementary school was named after Julia Ward Howe, and author who came to prominence in the 1800's. Most of this neighborhood is single family residential, with many upscale homes situated close to the river.
The Longfellow Neighborhood has a high concentration of commercial and multi-family housing within it's borders, and is served by the light rail transit system.
The Seward Neighborhood was named after William Seward, President Lincoln's secretary of state.
