Minnetonka, meaning “Great Water” in the Ojibwe indian language is situated on the shores of Lake Minnetonka one of the largest lakes in Minnesota at 14,000 acres. Minnetonka is proud of its reputation of preserving it's natural resources, with many parks and trails. The city is primarily single family residential, with the majority of the neighborhoods constructed in the 1950's to the 1970's.
Minnetonka’s largest employers are: United Health Group, and Cargill Companies. The city is served by three independent school districts; the Hopkins School District, the Minnetonka School District and the Wayzata School District.
