The University Community is the neighborhoods surrounding the highly renowned University Of Minnesota. The University is a public research facility campus that was established in 1851. The University has the sixth largest main campus student body in the United States, with 51,853 students as of the 2012-2013 school year. This eclectic community has a mix of residential and commercial real estate throughout it's borders, and the entire community caters to the student body, and all their housing needs. There are six distinctive neighborhoods within the borders of the University Community.
The Cedar Riverside neighborhood is located on the west side of the Mississippi River. This neighborhood is named after the road intersection where Cedar Avenue and Riverdale Avenue meet. In the late 1800's the neighborhood was known as "Snoose Boulevard" and had a large population of Scandinavian immigrants. The Cedar Riverside neighborhood presently prides itself with one of the largest communities of recent immigrants in the Twin Cities
The Como neighborhood is a highly desirable location for students from the University of Minnesota, which is in close proximity. The Como neighborhood is named after Como Avenue which runs through this interesting neighborhood; and Como Avenue took it's name from Lake Como in Italy. The housing in this area is mostly early 1900's bungalow's and 1920's art's and craft's style homes, with a small percentage of newer duplexes and single family homes.
The Marcy Holmes neighborhood is located on the east banks of the Mississippi River and one of the most historic neighborhoods in Minneapolis.
The Nicollet Island/East Bank neighborhood is one of the smaller neighborhoods in Minneapolis, and is on the banks of the Mississippi River. Nicollet island is named after Joseph Nicollet a geographer, scientist and explorer from France who led expeditions through Minnesota. This neighborhood is at the historic and geographical center of Minneapolis.
The Prospect Park neighborhood is on the east banks of the Mississippi, and is a hilly tree lined neighborhood with many turn of the century homes. The neighborhood was platted as the Prospect Park Subdivision in the late 1880's, and was considered a Minneapolis suburb that was connected to Minneapolis by the street car line.
The University neighborhood is comprised mostly of the University of Minnesota campus. The University is considered one of the top colleges in the United States, and the main campus sits on nearly 2000 acres. Most of the housing in this neighborhood is made up of student housing managed by the University. The Mississippi River separates the University neighborhood into the west bank and the east bank.
